why do you have a vitamin deficiency?
why do you need to consume multivitamins?
why do these vitamins and minerals matter a lot?
So, here I am to talk about various nutrients and why they are necessary to sustain a good and healthy life.
What Are The Nutrients?
Nutrients are the building blocks that help with the growth of the body, repairs cells, and regulate the chemical processes necessary for the body to function. Nutrients are mainly divided into two parts. Macronutrients and Micronutrients.
The body requires these nutrients in large quantities to fuel itself. Carbohydrates, protein, and fats belong to this category.
The body requires these nutrients in small quantities. Vitamins and minerals fall under this category.
Nutrients whether macro or micro is really important to lead a healthy life. Without these nutrients, our body will not function properly. Our body gets the energy it needs from macronutrients such as carbs, protein, and fats.
According to nutritionists, there are six essential nutrients that our body requires. These are called essentials because the body cannot perform well without these nutrients. These nutrients are important for proper growth and strengthening our bodies. But the human body does not produce these nutrients and if it does it is in a very low amount. So, we have to get these nutrients from outside such as the food we eat.
The Essential Nutrients For The Body
Carbohydrates or most commonly known as carbs are sugar molecules. The main function of any kind of carbohydrate is to provide energy to the body.
The body converts the carbohydrates present in the food and converts them into blood sugar which is more commonly known as glucose.
There are two different types of carbs, simple and complex.
Simple carbs or just sugars are made up of short chains of molecules which makes it easier for the body to digest. Simple carbs raise the blood sugar or glucose level of the body fast which provides the body with a short burst of energy.
Sugar - also called simple carbs being the most basic form. This is the white sugar that we use on a daily basis. This sugar also includes the sugar that is naturally occurring in fruits, vegetables, and milk.
Foods rich in simple carbs are
- table sugar
- fruit juice concentrate
- or any product with added sugar
Complex carbs are made up of long-chain molecules. This makes the complex carbs harder to digest and a more stable source of energy. As complex carbs have longer chains, they take longer to break down and provide energy for an extended period in the body.
Food containing complex carbs are
- brown rice
- white flour
- white rice
- white bread
Starch - also called complex carbs. These are called complex carbs because of their complex chemical structure. The body breaks down the starch present in the food into sugar to use for energy. Bread, cereal, and pasta, certain vegetables like potato, peas, and corn have starch in them.
Fiber - This is also a complex carbohydrate. The body cannot digest most of the fibers consumed, it helps to make you feel full and controls overeating. The fiber also helps add volume to the stool and makes it smooth, which helps the body maintain a healthy bowel movement.
Protein is a macronutrient that is essential for muscle gain. Chemically, protein is made up of amino acids (20 amino acids to be precise). Protein helps with building muscles and metabolism. Protein also helps the immune system stay strong. The main sources of protein are animal products such as
- & dairy products
Some vegan products that contain the protein are
- & beans
The protein present in the meatless product is comparatively lower as compared to the meat products.
Fats offer energy to the body and aid in a variety of tasks. However, it's critical to eat healthy fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats while limiting or avoiding saturated and trans fats.
High-fat diets are frequently associated with poor health. Certain fats, on the other hand, are required for optimal health.
Healthy fats help with the following functions:
- cell growth
- absorption of vitamins & minerals
- creation of the new cells
- reducing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes
- movement of muscles
- clotting of the blood
- balance blood sugar
- functioning of the brain
- production of hormones
- immune function
Healthy fats can be found in a variety of foods, including:
vegetable oils, nuts, seafood such as salmon and tuna;
seeds and coconut oil.
Vitamins are micronutrients that your body requires in small amounts because it produces some in a less quantity or may not produce at all.
Just because vitamins are classified as micronutrients and the body requires them in small quantities, it doesn't mean that they can be ignored. The deficiency of any one vitamin can lead to serious health issues.
Vitamins are micronutrients that offer a range of health benefits, including:
- boost the immune system
- aid calcium absorption
- maintain healthy skin
- help body metabolize proteins and carbs
- prevent or delay certain cancers, such as prostate cancer - strengthen teeth and bones
- support healthy blood
- aid brain and nervous system functioning
Our body can get Vitamin D from sunlight and the gut bacteria produces some amount of vitamin K. But to get the rest of the vitamins, you need food or supplements to maintain the balance of vitamins.
There are two types of vitamins
Water-soluble - these types of vitamins are called so because they get dissolved in the water present inside the body and get excreted quickly via urine and need to be replaced often. Vitamin C and 8 types of Vitamin B's are water-soluble.
Fat-soluble - these vitamins are similar to oil and do not dissolve in water. Fat-soluble vitamins are mostly present in foods that are high in fats and are absorbed better into the bloodstream. Vitamins A, D, E, K fall into this category.
A person can obtain most of the vitamins they require through a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins. While those who consume insufficient fruits and vegetables and those who have digestive problems may need to take a vitamin supplement to avoid or reduce a deficiency.
Minerals are also micronutrients like vitamins but minerals are inorganic and do not undergo any structural change when ingested. This makes them more stable. Minerals are further divided into Major and Trace minerals.
Major minerals such as magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, sulfur, sodium, potassium, and chloride help the body balance water levels, maintain healthy skin, hair, and nails, and improve bone health.
Trace minerals like iron, zinc, manganese, chromium, copper, iodine, selenium, fluoride, molybdenum assists with maintaining healthy bones and teeth, supporting muscle function, improving immunity, and increasing energy production.
The human body is mostly made up of water. Every cell requires water to function properly. To be more precise, the human body is made up of 60% water. The brain and heart are about 73% of water. Muscles and kidneys are about 79% of water. Skin is made of about 64% and the lungs are about 83% of water.
While the human body is capable of going for weeks without food it can only last for about 3 to 4 days without water. Even slight dehydration can cause headaches and impaired physical and mental functions.
Water provides numerous benefits to the body like
-flushing out toxins
-and healthy skin
According to studies men should consume about 3.7 litres of water daily and women should consume about 2.7 litres of water.
